Connect Channels: Channel Types & Naming Conventions

This article defines five example communication channel types used across Progress Retail client deployments. Following these conventions ensures consistent information flow, reduces channel sprawl, and makes it easy for all staff to know where to go for the right type of communication.
Type 1: Operational Channels
Prefix | [Store-Name]-Operations or store-001-ops |
Purpose | Daily operations, task coordination, and incident reporting at the store level. |
Participants | Store Manager, Supervisors, Store Leads, relevant store staff |
Rules | Task completion comments only — no general chat

Example | Boston-store-ops (for Boston location) |
Type 2: Announcement Channels
Prefix | [Role]-Announcements or [Function]-Alerts |
Purpose | One-way broadcasts for policy updates, compliance notices, and emergency alerts. |
Participants | All intended recipients can view; posting is restricted to admins only. |
Rules | Admin-only posting — no replies allowed

Type 3: Department Channels
Prefix | [Department]-Team or [Function]-Group |
Purpose | Cross-store discussion, best practice sharing, and peer-to-peer support within a functional role. |
Participants | All staff with the same functional role, regardless of location (e.g., all inventory staff, all marketing team etc). |
Rules | Open discussion is encouraged

Type 4: Project/Initiative Channels
Prefix | [Project-Name]-Project or [Initiative-Name]-Task-Force |
Purpose | Temporary collaboration space for a specific project or initiative with a defined start and end date. |
Participants | Project team members only — access is scoped to active contributors. |
Rules | Active only during the project lifecycle

Type 5: Corporate Channels
Prefix | Corporate-[Function] or All-[Audience] |
Purpose | Company-wide or multi-location announcements from corporate or senior leadership. |
Participants | All staff, or a defined audience (e.g., all managers, all full-time staff across locations). |
Rules | High-signal, low-noise — use sparingly
