Connect Channels: Channel Types & Naming Conventions

This article defines five example communication channel types used across Progress Retail client deployments. Following these conventions ensures consistent information flow, reduces channel sprawl, and makes it easy for all staff to know where to go for the right type of communication.

Type 1: Operational Channels

Prefix

[Store-Name]-Operations  or  store-001-ops

Purpose

Daily operations, task coordination, and incident reporting at the store level.

Participants

Store Manager, Supervisors, Store Leads, relevant store staff

Rules

Task completion comments only — no general chat

  1. Announcements can be pinned for visibility

Example

Boston-store-ops (for Boston location)

Type 2: Announcement Channels

Prefix

[Role]-Announcements  or  [Function]-Alerts

Purpose

One-way broadcasts for policy updates, compliance notices, and emergency alerts.

Participants

All intended recipients can view; posting is restricted to admins only.

Rules

Admin-only posting — no replies allowed

  1. Each post must link to the relevant source document

  2. Not open for discussion; redirect questions to appropriate ops channel

  3. Option to also include any HR announcements such as: promotions, anniversaries, birthdays, holidays.

Type 3: Department Channels

Prefix

[Department]-Team  or  [Function]-Group

Purpose

Cross-store discussion, best practice sharing, and peer-to-peer support within a functional role.

Participants

All staff with the same functional role, regardless of location (e.g., all inventory staff, all marketing team etc).

Rules

Open discussion is encouraged

  1. Moderated to prevent off-topic drift

Inventory-team  or  Marketing-team

Type 4: Project/Initiative Channels

Prefix

[Project-Name]-Project  or  [Initiative-Name]-Task-Force

Purpose

Temporary collaboration space for a specific project or initiative with a defined start and end date.

Participants

Project team members only — access is scoped to active contributors.

Rules

Active only during the project lifecycle

  1. Include project end date in channel description

Example

holiday-refresh-project  or  new-pos-rollout

Type 5: Corporate Channels

Prefix

Corporate-[Function]  or  All-[Audience]

Purpose

Company-wide or multi-location announcements from corporate or senior leadership.

Participants

All staff, or a defined audience (e.g., all managers, all full-time staff across locations).

Rules

High-signal, low-noise — use sparingly

  1. Posts must align with brand voice guidelines

  2. Link to supporting materials where applicable
